David J. Weitz, J.D.
Senior Vice President, U.S. Intellectual Property Department and General Counsel
Mr. David J. Weitz leads the U.S. Intellectual Property Department for Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (Takeda) and manages all IP personnel throughout the United States. David also serves as General Counsel and Secretary for Takeda San Diego, Inc.
Prior to the acquisition of Syrrx, Inc. by Takeda, Mr. Weitz served as the company's General Counsel, Vice President of Intellectual Property and Secretary where he established and built the company's legal and intellectual property departments. He negotiated all of Syrrx's major business transactions including the acquisition of the company by Takeda in 2005.
Prior to joining Syrrx/Takeda, Mr. Weitz was a Partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati (WSGR) of Palo Alto, CA where he co-headed the firm's patent department. He was the first associate in the firm's history to be elected to the WSGR partnership from the patent department.
At WSGR, his practice covered all aspects of intellectual property and focused on companies in the areas of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemistry, material science, medical devices, lasers and optics. While at WSGR, Mr. Weitz represented Syrrx prior to its original founding in 1999 and continuously thereafter until he joined Syrrx in 2002.
Mr. Weitz received a Juris Doctor from the University of California, Berkeley (Boalt Hall School of Law), a Masters of Science degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.S. in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
