Takeda San Diego Provides Holiday Season Festivities for Resident Adolescents at the San Diego Center for Children

December 21, 2009, San Diego, CA: For the seventh consecutive year, Takeda San Diego (TSD) employees warmed the hearts of teens enrolled in the Clark Adolescent Residential Program (CARP) at the San Diego Center for Children (SDCC) by fulfilling gift wish lists and throwing a holiday season party for them.

TSD employees raised funds for the gifts with a baked goods sale, and a chili/curry cook off contest. The proceeds of the fundraisers went to purchasing winter clothes and personal items for each of the resident adolescents. The SDCC also received a variety of sought after communal items including, DVDs, sports equipment and computer games, from TSD employees. In addition, TSD sponsored a holiday party, and followed the lead of its generous employees by making a matching donation to fund ongoing SDCC programs for the children.

The holiday party held at the SDCC, gave TSD employees a chance to better know the teens at the center. Over a pizza lunch, the young adults received their gifts, interacted with TSD employees, and played with two dogs that accompanied their TSD owners. “I can only imagine the challenges these children face every day,” commented Robyn Fabrey, a TSD scientist present at the party, “so giving them some happiness at this time of year is a priceless experience for me.”

Kevin Robertson, director of campus programs, addressed TSD employees after the gift giving commenting, “We are grateful not only for the gifts, but for time spent hanging out with the kids. That really is the best part for the children and the staff.” One of the children thanked TSD staff at the close of the event by singing a touching a capella rendition of “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.”

TSD employees support a variety of corporate volunteer activities each year designed to enhance employee relationships with society. The SDCC event represents one example of a Takeda group giving something back to the community during the holiday season.

According to the SDCC, without help from the center and its supporters, these adolescents are at a greater risk of becoming a long-term statistic in the social services or juvenile court system. In the worst case, they may become casualty of the streets.
